Hugo Broos Announces SA Team for Morocco Game
Bafana Bafana boss, Hugo Broos, has announced his 23-player team that will take on Morocco for their Group K 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier next Saturday, 17 June, at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The match will be the home side’s last qualifier following their 2-1 win over Liberia in March, with their spot already secured.
A 34-man squad was announced last month, but the 71-year-old Belgian coach whittled the number down to 23 men by Thursday, 8 June. Most notably, Cape Town City striker Khanyiso Mayo – who is widely expected to sign on with Kaizer Chiefs – was left out.
Broos explained that despite Mayo improving towards the end of the 2022/23 season, he had limited space: ”You have to make decisions and you have to make choices, sometimes the choices are difficult also for me … I can only select 23 players.”
One name that made a return was midfielder Njabulo Blom, who missed the previous two games against Liberia due to being ill.
Other names left out include Mamelodi Sundowns defender Khuliso Mudau, Stellenbosch FC striker Iqraam Rayners, Orlando Pirates midfielder Miguel Timm and Moreirense FC forward Kobamelo Kodisang.
Although Broos and company will only be jetting off to Ivory Coast in six months, he’s taking every upcoming opportunity to harden his men for the tournament.
